Server Memory Upgrades

Why Upgrade?

Adding more memory to your server will often yield the largest performance increase per dollar of any upgrade available. The reason for this is simple. When your webserver receives a request for your index page and all its associated images, it has to load those files from the hard drive in the server. The disk is naturally the slowest part of any computer system due to the moving parts. So now that your index page has been served to Joe User, it is stored in “cache memory” which is basically whatever free memory your server has. The next user to request the same page, images, etc will be served directly from RAM instead of re-reading the file from the disk. Any file served out of memory instead of from the disk is served up much faster, which frees up your server to process more requests per second. In short, the more ram in your server, the more free memory that can be used as cache memory for serving your files. This is why memory is so important for overall server performance.
